April 23 2012
April has become a bad month for me around the shop. It's the month the new wholesale catalog comes out and for the last several years, and especially last year and this year, prices have shot up. I mean shot up. Leather is up another few percent and so is the hardware this year. A side of leather (that's half a steer hide) is now well over $200. Man, I can't believe it. Even the glue I use is waaaay up. Try $50.00 per gallon. $50.00 folks!! It has doubled in price in the last few years. When I started using it, it was $25. I know I'm going to have to raise my prices, but I think I'll wait till late summer to do it. We'll just have to see if I can hold out that long. I'll try. Thank you all for your business and loyalty. I do appreciate you.
March 9, 2012 PLENTY OF WARNING---PLENTY OF WARNING--- Snow Canyon Outfitters will be closed the months of July and August 2012. One thing I've learned over the years is that when opportunity knocks on your door, you'd better answer it. Please plan accordingly if you know you need something in that timeframe. I would really like to wind down the last week of June so I don't have leatherwork and customer service on my plate come July 1. You can still place orders on this site and pay via Paypal during that time, and it's first ordered, first served, but be aware your order wont be made, or shipped, until early to mid September. Thank you for your understanding. Also, thank you to my loyal friends (customers) who know and appreciate the quality and craftsmanship difference in something as simple as a dog collar or lead. Please know that I do appreciate your business very much.
February 14, 2012 Shipping Charges HOW DO I ROLL? Many of you have commented (all positive I might add) on the refund you see in your package if actual shipping cost was less than you were charged at checkout when you order off the website. It has always been my policy that I make my profit on the products I make and sell rather than the backs of the USPS or UPS workers. Most other companies charge you "shipping and handling" fees. What is a "handling" fee? OK, yeah I know,,,, box, tape, labels etc. That's not how I roll. After much thought and an experience at our wonderful USPS office her in town, I have decided to change the way I have been charging for shipping. In the past I have put money back in the package to refund extra shipping charges. I have decided to no longer do this. Our shipping rates have always been based on a dollar amount of the total order. This will not change. What will change is the shipping rate ( I have lowered those rates) and the fact that I will no longer refund the extra in the form of cash in the package. Thieves have apparently gotten savvy to cash in the box and I have had one package opened and the cash, just the cash, taken out and the package sent on it's way. On top of this, it's just a pain in the butt to have cash on hand all the time to refund. So, to summarize: Shipping rates have been lowered, and I wont be refunding cash for extra shipping any more. Here's how it all shakes out Lower 48 only 0-50 = $7.00 50-100 = $10.00 100-200 = $13.00 200-300 = $15.00 300-up = $20.00 At checkout, paypal will ask your postal code. If it does not show you a shipping cost, you need to call us for a shipping quote. All lower 48 states are entered into paypal. Alaska and Hawaii are different rates. Please call for a quote. International orders most call for shipping quotes as well. Don't just order off the website and assume.....Call first!!! I think you will agree that our shipping rates are fair. I don't charge a "handling" fee, so our rate is based on actual shipping fees with insurance included. Sad, but insurance is almost a must now days. I will make a few cents on some orders and lose on others. Thank you to all of my customers who are willing to pay for QUALITY. THAT'S HOW I ROLL!
April 21, 2011 I just received my 2011 supply catalog from my main supplier that I use to buy almost all of my raw goods, leather, snaps, buckles, rings, thread, etc. Good thing I was sitting down. I have seen price increases before, but not like this one. This one blew me away. Here are some examples. A side of leather, (that's half a steer hide) up $20.00. That's over a $1.00 per square foot of useable leather increase, and pushing the $200.00 mark for the side!! Hardware (buckles, rings, dee rings, loops, etc) are up about 10%. Shipping rates are up too and since they are tied to fuel prices, will probably go higher. It's getting tough for me to cope. I DO NOT want to raise my prices!!! I'll do my very best to hold on to my price point as it is, but I just don't see how I can continue to long without a price increase. You might just say "well, change your supplier". It doesn't work that way folks. it just doesn't. If you can't already tell, I'm kinda discouraged right now. I do what I do because I love working with my hands, turning a cow skin into useful, and durable tools to be used for their intended purpose. Sometimes they're even pretty easy to look at too. Now, I'm a really nice guy, but I still need to make a profit at what I do. Price increases are imminent.

Many of you field trial folks are now using the Garmin Astro to locate that all age dog that blew out the front door. I am now offering a sturdy leather case for the receiver that snaps on the saddle. Made of saddle skirting leather and built to last. I'll have photos and ordering info on the "field trial gear" page soon.
February 18, 2009 After a nasty computer crash and a long time without an update and unfortunately for me, a price adjustment, I'm back in the saddle. I hope anyway. Some of you were able to take advantage of some old prices that I could not update. That's ok. I honored my prices. In the next few days, some things will go up in price and a few things will come down. Seems strange to me that now fuel prices are back into reality, that raw goods prices have not reflected that reduction. It shouldn't seem strange, I know how things work. People are still trying to recover lost profits, etc. It's just frustrating! I guess we now have our economy to worry about huh?
May 25, 2008 Diesel Fuel is now $4.80 per gallon in St. George. As we all know, fuel prices affect virtually everything we buy sooner or later. I hope we gat a break soon! If it keeps going, maybe we'll all be ridin' horses. Then I'll be REALLY busy!
March 16, 2008 Well folks, here we go again. With fuel prices at an all time high, it hasn't taken very long at all for leather, and especially hardware, to follow suit. I have never in my life paid the kind of prices I'm paying now for leather and hardware. So, another price increase is necessary for me to maintain my business. Not on every product, but many. Diesel fuel is at $3.91 in St. George, Utah as of Sunday, March 16, 2008 I hope you all understand that even though I have had a couple of price increases in the past, the value you get for your hard earned dollars spent with Snow Canyon Outfitters, is even greater today than in days past. "Why" you ask. How can that be possible? Three main reasons. 1 I have not raised prices to coincide with the actual raise in leather and hardware prices. My profit margins have shrunk. I love what I do or I would have quit by now. It just isn't all about the money. 2 Many companies have gone to leathers consisting of foreign hides, tanned in foreign countries. Cheaper hardware seems to be common as well. I have had some try to convince me these products are "just as good". I have not seen this to be the case, EVER! I WILL NOT COMPROMISE WITH INFERIOR LEATHER OR HARDWARE, PERIOD!! 3 You have my personal guarantee on everything I make. I still maintain my loyalty to my supply companies I have dealt with for years. They, for the most part, share my feelings on foreign goods. In short, I buy only the best I can find, and I buy American products whenever possible. Therefore, the value you get for your money is reflected in quality leather, hardware, and quality craftsmanship. You will use your Snow Canyon Outfitters product for many years to come and the product will be a pleasure to use the whole time. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has ordered from me in the past. To you my loyal customers, who know the difference between mass produced products and craftsmanship, and are willing to make that investment, I say a heartfelt THANK YOU!
November 24, 2007 As oil prices go, so goes leather and hardware prices. Again! I continue to hold out on almost all of my products. But I have raised one or two items that I did not have priced appropriately to start with. Even then, those few things only went up a couple of dollars. Shipping continues to go up with the fuel prices. When will it stop? I just stopped in the local saddle and tack store yesterday,,, $74.95 for a basic tooled headstall for the horse. It was nicely done, but not even latigo lined. WOW! I'm going to add some of my headstalls to the website after the holiday season and they'll be just over half that price. Latigo lined too! You may want to check back if your interested. Thanks folks for your continued business and support. Ya'll keep me going around here. June 1, 2007 As oil prices go, so goes leather and hardware prices. I'm not sure why leather continues to sky rocket in price, but that's what's happening. Not only is it tied to fuel prices, but there seems to be a leather shortage as of late. I'm going to hold off on another price increase as long as I can. I'm just going to try to ride it out. Hardware continues to climb as well. Let's all hope both leather and hardware prices will back off soon. I want to again thank you, my loyal customers, for your business and for your commitment to buy and use quality products from custom shops like mine. I'm just glad there are still people out there savvy enough to know quality when they see it, and be willing to pay for it. Thank You! It's getting tougher folks!!! Hang in there! April 2, 2007 I just found more Manicardi Balsamic and I do have a few bottles in stock. See the "Tasty Stuff " page. March 1, 2007 Saddles..Saddles..Saddles
Snow Canyon Outfitters will soon offer custom made saddles. Check back for more details. January 17, 2007 Well folks,,,,I finally had to do it! I held out as long as I possibly could, but it caught up to me. It caught up to me just like it catches up to all of us. I HAD TO RAISE MY PRICES. Virtually everything I use to make my quality leather products has gone up in price and some items have gone up dramatically. Leather has taken a jump, hardware, both brass and stainless steel, copper, way up. You get the picture. In most cases items have only gone up slightly, maybe $3 to $5, in some cases more, but you need to know that I continue to do my best to offer you a quality custom made product at a fair price, and with my guarantee of satisfaction. I would like to pass along a sincere THANK YOU to all my loyal customers. You make it all worth while. You keep me going. Kent |
